Lada Niva - The Interview Summary

Lada Niva - Edition Roscosmos is a short film from Gremany, the winner of the Computer graphics and design category at Europrix 2010.
There were many people involved in this project (mostly German film students) but the most of the work was handled by three of them: Florian Friedrich (director), Cristoph Schmidt (graphics) and Florian Werzinski (graphics), as a part of their way to acquire their diplomas. They were all in Graz for the Europrix awards and I took my chance to interview them.

Everyone would be disappointed to hear that no one of these three guys drives Lada Niva. So, what was the inspirational process like? - Well, it was Florian F.'s (the director's) idea. "It's an amazing car," he said, "so I just decided to make a film about it." Florian W. and Cristoph liked the idea and joined the project, and although it's them who were responsible for the graphics, they agree that the idea was the project's strongest point.

Of course, all aspects were important, and they say they are completely satisfied with how it turend out, and they wouldn't change anything if they could. It was important that everything went according to the plan, but there was also some space for improvisation that they had to leave to the Russian actors, they were lucky to find.

The film is a combination of 3D animation and scenes they have shot both in front of the green screen in studio and out in the field. Although they were applying what they have learned during studies and internships they had, in no way this was a safe ground for them. Good camera tracking was crucial for the film to look good, and therefore, this was the most challenging part. Florian the director said that there was a lot of hard work for him in the first phases of the project, but later on, he just enjoyed being the boss and approved or disapproved the work of the other two.

The project took 6 months to finish, and as Florian F. is from Munich and Cristoph and Florian W. from Nuremberg (they have met when the later two visited the university in Munich), most of the communication was handled via Skype. They couldn't be precise about the budget but it was certainly very low: most of the resources were used from the university or more small sources including some state funding for education.

Now that they won the category, they can finally dedicate themselves to their plans for the future. They consider offering their work to Lada for the advertisement purposes although that was not their plan when they did it. Florian F. will further concentrate on directing the advertisements, Cristoph's goal is to eventually become a VFX supervisor in some big company, while Florian thinks about moving to some other country, maybe UK.

What they also mentioned is that this is not their first award. Lada Niva participated in four other festivals and won the awards at First-steps in Berlin, Spotlight in Mannheim and Kurzundschoen in Cologne.

They liked being in Graz. One of the best things there was the possibility to meet all those people from different locations all over Europe and to talk with them about their projects. Graz is a very nice city, and nightlife there was really cool, especially the fact that Styrian Stylez festival was in Graz while Europrix took place. In their opinion, the highlight was the gala. "Galas are always a cool thing and the highlight for nominees, but the workshops were a cool thing, too."

I asked them few days later if their phones are really ringing and Cristoph modestly said they're not ringing that much... But we're sure there's a bright future before them. And Lada Niva, too.
