A Beautiful Bloody Sound - Introduction

A beautiful bloody sound (binaural...3D sound) from joan brutal on Vimeo.

A Beautiful Bloody Sound is a short animation by Joan Masoliver from the London College of communication, United Kingdom. It is a nominee in the Computer Graphics and Design category.

The short film is made with simplistic and beautiful 3D-graphics but it's emphasis is strongly on the audio as well as visual side. The film tells a story about how the manufacturing of our mobile phones and other electronics influences the violence in the Democratic Republic of Kongo and get's it name from the sound of a mobile phones ring tone. It has a smart and well designed way of telling the viewer how that sound is made possible by extracting minerals from Africa and moving them all the way through the world to be made into the final product.

I think this short animation has a real change of winning against the other nominee in it's category because it is very well designed to put together all the sounds, graphics and the story to communicate it's message.

  1. Pretty cool, but you really need the headphones to experience it right. I would have hoped they used the 3D sound feeling a bit more, since that seems to be the target of the video. (Ok, knowing about columbite-tantalite, Coltan for short, is cool, but there is not really a clear reason why the animation is using the headphones-3D sound gadgets to put through its message.)

The last 30 seconds of the video is just white. Is it a bug or is there a meaning to it?

  2. I did not like this very much mainly because of the script. There are so many videos and songs like this that "awakens" people about the horrifying truths going on in the world and it seems very righteous in doing so. My main concern is that these awakenings do not really promote action in rectifying the wrongs in this world. It rather makes the audience feel like just by being aware of a problem and complaining about it is enough to feel good about it.

Vicariously we watch as the whole world dies...

I couldn't experience the 3D sound. That would have been interesting.

  3. I can't say this animation gave me any particular feelings. It's pretty, sure, but it does not touch the viewer's heart. The narration is annoying and too "elementary school learning videos that have been played for the last 20 years". And what was that "I'm talking here" part? An attempt at humor? In such a video?

I also have to agree, although the audio was nice with headphones, the visual part was lacking, to say the least. I get that the audio was important for this, but if the theme and way it's presented does not arouse the viewer (not that way, you pervs), the sound does not impress much either.
